Tribunes capture second straight national title
HERKIMER, NY - The Monroe Community College women's lacrosse team withstood a late rally to defeat Anne Arundel CC 8-6 and win the program's second straight NJCAA national championship.
The Tribunes, who finish 19-1, led 8-2 midway through the second half before the Pioneers captured momentum and climbed back into the game. Anne Arundel scored with 2:08 remaining to make it a two-goal game.
The Pioneers threatened again late, but Allyn Parrino (Brockport, NY/Brockport) gained possession for the Tribunes and raced up field to help run out the clock.
Anne Arundel opened the scoring in the first half, finding the net six minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. MCC responded with three goals in just over two minutes, as Kelly Reilly (Corning, NY/Corning East), Danielle LaDuca (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), and Melissa Smith (Geneva, NY/Geneva) all scored to make it 3-1.
Reilly and Theresa Catteau (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added goals later in the half and MCC led 5-2 at the break.
Monroe kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring three times to make it 8-2. Anne Arundel turned it around, but was unable to overcome the deficit.
LaDuca finished with two goals and one assist and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Goalie Mollie Zimmerman (Fairport, NY/Fairport) earned Defensive honors after stopping nine shots.
