2010 Season Outlook

Leaving Rochester, MN on the morning of May 19, 2009, the MCC softball team could do little to explain what had happened at the national tournament (including having a runner called out twice on the same play in a winner's bracket game).  Looking for their fourth consecutive national title, the Tribunes settled for a third-place finish.  But Monroe is looking to reclaim its spot atop the JUCO softball world, and many of the players are eyeing an April 17th matchup with defending champ Tompkins Cortland CC at home.

Monroe will once again play one of the toughest Division III schedules.  The Tribunes open up in the Phoenix College tournament, which includes several NJCAA Division I and II teams.  After playing in Arizona, MCC returns to play an extremely competitive Region III schedule, including games against TC3, Corning, and Broome.

Lions return to the Den

For the past few years, the Rochester Lions summer softball team has been very successful, including a national runner-up finish last year.  A trio of players from the Lions look to lead the way for MCC in 2010.

Pitcher Bri Allen (transfer from SUNY Plattsburgh) will anchor the pitching staff after registering a 1.90 ERA and 174 strikeouts a year ago.  She will be joined by returning sophomore Heather Kingsbury (14-3, 2.76) as well as freshman Kelly Spear (Warsaw High) to complete a deep staff.

MCC is well-known for quality shortstops, and that trend will continue this year.  Former Lion Alyssa Santos transferred from Northwood U. and will lead the infield.  Last year's shortstop, Amy Nowak (.420 BA), moves to second base. Rounding out the corners of the infield are sophomore Sam Disinger (.560, 6 HR, 38 RBIs) at first and Marge Wronski and Alex Hebert at third.  Carly Knight will also add depth to the infield.

The final Lion to return home is outfielder Jessica Stahl (Northwood U.)  She will provide punch at the plate as well as solid defense.  She will team with returners Lene'e Gray (.364) and Alyssa Devaney (28 SBs).

MCC will have solid depth at catcher with sophomore Kayla Steinkirchner and newcomers Nikki Kraft, Chelsea Mead, and Emma Pecoraro.  Hebert may also see time behind the plate.  She played on the Webster Thomas baseball team for four years.

The focus of the 2010 Tribunes is to play within their strengths.  They will try not to look ahead and play for every out.  This year's team will be reaching for the same lofty goals as the successful teams of the past.
