Biology Scholarships

Two scholarships are available through the MCC Biology Department: the Jennifer Jaruzel Memorial Biology Scholarship, and the Thomas R. Kissel Memorial Scholarship.

Jennifer Jaruzel Memorial Biology Scholarship

Award
The Biology Department will award up to $500 to an outstanding biology student at MCC. The scholarship is intended to assist students who plan to complete an MCC program degree in a biology advisement sequence (Biology, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Pre-Forestry or Pre-Pharmacy).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently registered full-time in a biology advisement sequence.
  • Completed (by May 31, 2012) a minimum of 7 credits (2 courses) of biology at MCC (Examples of courses include: BIO 155, BIO 156, BIO 170, BIO 209, BIO 221, BIO 225, BIO 226, BIO 230, BIO 260, BIO 265 and BIO 266)
  • Overall grade point average of 3.25 or better

Application Deadline Dates
Application materials are available from the Biology Department Office, 8-220, or here.  Application for the scholarship must be submitted to the Biology Department along with two letters of recommendation from MCC faculty members (one must be a biology instructor) on or before Friday, April 13th, 2012.

Thomas R. Kissel Memorial Scholarship

Purpose
Established to encourage and recognize outstanding students in biotechnology or chemistry and to memorialize Thomas Kissel, Senior Research Fellow at Ortho-Clinical diagnostics.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Recipient must be a full-time student who will have successfully completed two semesters at MCC with a minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of Spring 2012. The award goes towards expenses in the 2nd year.
  2. Major field of concentration must be biotechnology or chemistry.
  3. Preference will be given to a Monroe County resident.

Application
The following materials are required as part of the application process:

  1. A completed application form (available here (pdf), or from the Biology Department Office 8 – 228).
  2. A brief essay (250-300 words) written by the applicant that describes the student's educational goals at MCC, career goals upon leaving MCC, and qualities they possess that make them deserving of this award.
  3. Copy of transcript through December 31, 2011.
  4. Letters of reference from two MCC faculty members. At least one of the letters must come from an instructor in the Natural Sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, geosciences or physics).

Award
Determination of the recipient for this award will be completed by the Biology Department Scholarship Committee. The monetary value of this award will be $1,000.00.
